About Past2Perfect UK
About Past2Perfect UK
Past2Perfect UK provides photo restoration, photograph preservation and archive support for individuals, families, collectors, heritage groups and organisations. The service is UK-based, with remote assessment available for clients outside the UK.
Photographs are more than images. They are records of people, places, events and moments that help us understand our past.
Whether they belong to an individual, a family, a local history group, a community archive or a heritage organisation, photographs often represent an irreplaceable visual record that cannot be recreated once lost.
Past2Perfect UK was created to help preserve that record through careful restoration, preservation guidance and archive-led collection support.
Remote assessment is available for clients outside the UK, allowing photographs and photographic collections to be reviewed from scans, high-quality photographs or representative images before deciding whether restoration, preservation guidance or archive support is appropriate.
About the Founder
Mark
Founder, Past2Perfect UK
Photographic Collection Consultant
Hi, I’m Mark — founder of Past2Perfect UK and the person behind every project, helping clients organise, preserve and restore photographic collections.
Past2Perfect began with my own family photographs. Working with those images revealed how much history can be contained within a single photograph, and how easily that history can be lost through damage, neglect, poor storage or the passage of time. What began as a personal interest developed into a commitment to helping others protect important photographs and the stories connected to them.
My work with older photographs is informed by formal training in photographic conservation. This supports a more considered approach to damaged prints, albums, fragile materials and inherited collections, where restoration, handling, digitisation and long-term preservation all need to be judged carefully.
Every project is approached individually, with a focus on authenticity, accuracy and respect for the original image. The aim is not to make old photographs look artificially modern. The aim is to preserve their character, recover what can be recovered and protect the visual record they contain.
Collection Management Experience
Archive organisation is about more than simply sorting photographs into folders. It requires clear systems, accurate documentation, structured retrieval and the ability to manage collections in a way that remains useful and accessible over time.
As the founder of Past2Perfect UK, my background includes extensive experience organising, cataloguing and managing complex collections where accuracy, traceability, accountability and structured retrieval were essential.
These same principles can be applied to photographic collections. Photographs can be assessed, organised, referenced, digitised and preserved using practical systems that help reduce the risk of information becoming separated from the images themselves.
Whether working with a small family collection or thousands of photographs, the aim is the same: to create a collection that is easier to understand, easier to manage and easier to pass on to future generations.
This archive-led approach increasingly places Past2Perfect in the role of a Photographic Collection Consultancy, helping clients assess, organise, digitise and preserve collections as complete archives rather than simply individual photographs.
Why authenticity matters
In an age of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence, restoring a photograph has become easier than ever. Preserving its authenticity has not.
Many modern restoration tools can generate visually impressive results, but they often do so by inventing details that were never present in the original photograph. Facial features may be altered, textures may be fabricated and historical details may be unintentionally changed.
At Past2Perfect, restoration is approached differently. The goal is not to create a new image. The goal is to preserve and recover the original one.
Every decision is guided by the principle that restoration should support the historical record, not rewrite it.
Restoration as part of preservation
Repairing damage is only one aspect of protecting a photograph.
Long-term photographic preservation also involves organisation, careful digitisation, appropriate storage, documentation and the protection of context. A restored image is far more valuable when the names, places, dates and stories connected to it are also preserved.
This broader view of preservation increasingly shapes the work of Past2Perfect.
Looking beyond individual photographs
While many enquiries begin with a single damaged photograph, others involve boxes of family photographs, albums, negatives, slides or larger collections accumulated over many years.
In these situations, restoration is often only one part of the solution. Collections may also benefit from assessment, organisation, digitisation planning, documentation and long-term preservation measures designed to protect both the photographs and the information connected to them.
Past2Perfect increasingly supports clients with the wider management of photographic collections, helping create structure, improve accessibility and reduce the risk of important photographs becoming separated from their history and context.
Clients can seek help with a specific aspect of a collection or engage with multiple stages of the process depending on their individual requirements.
A preservation-led approach
Past2Perfect's approach to photographic preservation is informed by established principles of preventive conservation and collection management.
Rather than focusing solely on individual images, I look at photographic collections as a whole. This includes assessing condition, identifying preservation risks, improving organisation, recommending appropriate storage solutions, reducing unnecessary handling, and developing practical digitisation and documentation workflows.
Drawing upon recognised preservation methodologies, I help families, collectors and organisations create structured, manageable collections that support both long-term preservation and future access. The emphasis is always on safeguarding photographic heritage through careful planning, accurate documentation and proportionate intervention.
These principles underpin the archive support and collection management services offered through Past2Perfect, helping clients preserve not only individual photographs but also the wider history, context and stories that surround them.
To help clients understand this process, Past2Perfect follows a structured consultancy framework known as the Archive Process. This approach moves from discovery and assessment through organisation, preservation, digitisation, restoration where appropriate, and long-term collection management.

Preservation resources

These resources focus on archive organisation, digitisation planning, collection management, preservation best practice and the protection of stories and context.
Working with clients in the UK and outside the UK
Past2Perfect UK is based in the United Kingdom. Many restoration, preservation and collection support enquiries can begin remotely, using scans, high-quality photographs or representative images of a wider collection.
Remote assessment is available for clients outside the UK. This allows the condition, scope and likely next steps to be considered before any decision is made about restoration, preservation guidance, archive support or physical handling of original material.
Where physical originals may need to be handled, posted or reviewed in person, this is discussed separately so that the risks, practicalities and costs are understood before any work begins.
Each enquiry receives an individual assessment, clear guidance and transparent pricing before any chargeable work begins.
How the process works
Send your photograph or collection enquiry by email for an initial assessment. A clean scan is ideal for an individual photograph, while a short description and representative images are usually enough to begin discussing a wider collection.
You will receive clear guidance on what is possible, what may be needed and where best to begin. Where chargeable work is recommended, a quotation is provided before any work begins.
Protecting the past for the future
Every photograph tells a story.
Whether that story belongs to a family, a community, a collector or an institution, preserving it is about more than repairing damage. It is about protecting a visual record that may never exist again.
Past2Perfect’s mission is simple:
Preserve the image. Protect the history. Safeguard the legacy.
Get an assessment
If you have a photograph you would like restored, or a collection you would like to discuss, send it over for an initial assessment. You will be told what is possible, what the work may involve, the quoted cost where applicable and the most sensible next step.
